Above: Clipping a dogs nails is a simple procedure that is often done being careful not to cut too short into the nerve.
Above: A dog with an abnormal heart beat is getting an EKG that is being sent to an analysis lab through the phone. The EKG machine (small gray box) makes a fluctuating squeaking noise that is transmitted over the phone and is then translated to an EKG diagram to be analyzed. At first the dog was shaking and it disturbed the signal but once we calmed her the signal was sent and she was diagnosed with an arrhythmia.
Above: This cat had a serious limp and the owners thought she might have a hurt hip or back leg, but watching it walk and laying down it appeared to be a problem with its elbows. The elbows were swolen and showed signs of bursitis. The cat lays like this in order to avoid bending the elbows to reduce pain. The cat was given anti-inflamatory and a cortico steroid.
Above: This dog came in for a teeth cleaning but had previously had glaucoma and removal of both eyes. The dog still had a good sense of his owner's presence and was very friendly.

Thanks to the generocity of Tom Munkittrick DVM, I spent a day observing at this location to compare and contrast a large practice with a small practice. Above Left: Dental care room Above Right: This is their own chemical analysis lab which allows them to test blood and diagnose animals quickly if need be. Left: Main examination room with eight tables and with anesthesia Below: Digital X-ray machine. This is a very expensive machine but allows for quick X-rays that are completely digital and easy to work with. This large practice used X-rays much more frequently since they had access to this machine. |
